I'm done with my red scarf!

I'm done!! YEA! Ok now when I signed up for this I took the red part literally but later learned it didn't need to be exactly red.......ummm......oooppps! Here it is -

I know it looks kinda girly huh? Oh well hopefully some nice girl will like it =) I'm still hoping to make another one. Princess of P0P has her's about two-thirds the way done so far. She was all into it then lost her mojo a couple days ago. Her writing has overtaken her craftyness =) Her scarf is very gender neutral so that's good.

Now all that's left is sewing up a quilt for Wrapped in HOPE and we are wanting to make some blankets for a local dog shelter. We were inspired to do this by a friend's daughter's birthday wish. It is her birthday wish for anyone wanting to get her birthday presents to instead donate an item or money to the local dog shelter. How noble of her to do this! I'm so proud of her - it just makes your heart burst when kids are this great =)

If I won a dream vacation...

If I won a dream vacation the 4 people I would bring are:

w/e pays the most on ebay
because I would need a trip for 6! I couldn't possibly go on vacation without my family!

w/e pays the most through the ad I put in the paper
still the family thing, can't do it!

my husband
In the event that I am not able to sell the tickets I would go with my husband only and forget the other 2 tickets. I would feel terrible the whole time because the kids were missing out though. I would definitely be one of those people trying to buy 2 extra tickets so we could all go! =)

little blue house yard ideas

The little blue house actually has a teeny yard but the lot to the east which is owned by the same landlord is empty and he includes it with the rental of the little blue house. Due to the size of the house and parking arrangements, this lot is very seldom used by the occupants of the little blue house. And since the landlord has lots of problems with tenants mowing when they are supposed to I think I have a shot. I'm hoping to trade mowing in the coming season for use of the land.

One of the main things I need to do is call and have things like utilities marked off. This is necessary to see what area can even be used. It's not a large lot so where the old house and it's underground utilities may make it unusable for anything but raised bed gardening. (which may be better anyway - less weeds!)

I'm not sure what I want to use it for I've had a few ideas. The cheapest option is to use it for staples like tomatoes, peppers, beans, squash, pumpkins, etc. I can buy seeds for these types of things easily out at Walmart cheap. Also then if kids tear it up then I'm only out a minor amount. But staple type garden items are usually easier to grow and preserve.

One other option is to buy some fruit trees and plant them there for future use. This is WAY more of an investment and a much longer term pay off. But boy would it be nice! And unless someone cut them down, they could be enjoyed by many for years. I think something that has fruits that when on the ground would be easily run over by a typical lawn mower would go over with the landlord better. The tree would then have more of a chance to live longer. Because let's face it, we may not be here to harvest the fruits every year and who wants to run over an apple or a peach? So I'm thinking more along the lines of cherry or crab apple. Plus with something that stays small/short then it won't be hacked on by the utility company either. I know that there is no way a couple of kids are going to pick all the little fruits off 4-6 trees like those. Heck it's hard to do when you want to and your an adult!

Another thing I am slightly worried about is adults or kids stealing the food. I'm only slightly worried about it because I'm sure I would give willingly if asked but I'm not sure they will ask. Plus, I thought about using the produce grown here for the local food pantry or to give away free in some way. So would it matter if someone who needed it took without permission? I guess that's not my worry. I'm more worried someone taking more than their able to use and letting it go to waste.

I'm really wanting to help out the community with some gardening. I'm hoping it will inspire more people to do their own gardening and eat healthier. Not that I'm all that concerned with the eating healthier LOL! But I do know that MANY people who are on food stamps can't afford large amounts of fresh produce no matter what the season is and the local farmers market does NOT take the food stamp card here. So alot of people who want to eat more healthy aren't able to. From what I can tell not many in the area even TRY to garden and so many of them could. I think showing by example along with telling everyone I can is the best I can do for now.

These are all some ideas I've had lately. If life stays calm I'm going to put them into use =)  If life doesn't then who knows?

Wrapped in Hope

I am going to participate in Wrapped in Hope. It's an event (not sure what to call it?) being held/run by Margaret's Hope Chest. The goal is to provide children of a prisoner a special birthday quilt. I am so excited and can't wait to get started on it!!

Here's what I wrote to her -

Thank you so much for thinking of these kids this is something that touches me in many ways.
I once was one of these children because of a decision my mom made. In this state today for the same charge she would have only been sent to jail but at that time she went to prison (disorderly conduct). The Angel Tree organization at that time was not in place. Although we did have a decent Xmas things were difficult as we were passed from home to home with family members. My mom cried a lot because of this time period but she never put her self in that position again.
My brother's wife also spent time in prison. The Angel Tree was a god send to them and their daughters during this time. She said it was the greatest thing in the world to know that even though she had made the wrong choices in life that someone cared enough to not punish her kids. We all supported and helped my brother out during this time so that their daughters didn't get shipped from home to home. My brother tried so hard but there is only so much one person can do. Especially when their birthdays, Xmas and Easter all fell within a 3 month period that year.
I think of all the little things we helped him with that he wasn't able to do on his own -- that's why I'm so happy to help with this project. Your right there are very few organizations like this in place - in fact none in my tri-state area that I know of.

our latest news

With my new usage of Facebook, I often forget to update here and I really want to change that. But on the other hand I sure don't want to state any posting goals! That would drive me insane.

The house we moved to after leaving SR's was a VERY small house approx. 500 sq. ft. The "little blue house" was great for us to be able to get back into a home but not so great space wise because we couldn't even get all our stuff out of storage! So if we could find a house that was a little bit larger yet higher rent we probably could afford it -- IF it would fit all our stuff from storage so we could cut out that expense.

We found out one was available with the same landlord about 35 days after moving to the little blue house. This was great for us, but sucked cause we then had to pack everything up again to move. But it's nice that we only had to go around the corner so not too much gas being used to move things. It's so close that we can see one house from the other and the kids can run back and forth for anything we forget.

Some other great things are - it's BIG without being too big for us. It's about 900 sq. ft. with a basement. It also only has 2 bedrooms (as did the little blue house) but after living in Iowa Falls this is really roomy! And the bedrooms are some of the largest I've ever seen! The one that the kids have called theirs is large enough that it could easily be split in half which is an idea for later (the landlord won't care either way).

But the boys have already been looking at the basement for possible bedroom ideas as there is an area that is ideal. I'm just not so sure about winter use. Plus, I already have a million ideas for using the basement for storage of stuff and food. Darkside and I have also debated many recreational uses like exercise/weight room, a pool table, or my favorite - a hot tub! We will have to see =)

The yard is more ideal for things I'm wanting to do than over at the little blue house. This house's yard is nice since it's mostly enclosed with a privacy fence. I'm not so sure about parking here though. I also will need to figure out where we are going to put up a clothes line as there isn't one here yet. But I know that now we will be able to have bunnies - YEA!!

Although gardening wise I think I'll have to stick to containers and the big one out at SR's. The yard here is smaller than the little blue house and very shaded. Not that I don't think it'll work, cause I'll MAKE it work! And I think I'll have fewer problems with neighborhood kid problems with my gardening efforts here. The school buses all let out right by the gardening area at the little blue house so I'm pretty sure I would have had a HUGE battle gardening there. Out at SR's I only have to worry about wild animals and the local bean farmer with his toxic fertilizer spray =(

I still have plans to ask the landlord to lease part of the little blue house's yard to me for use. It's an idea Darkside, SR, and I have all discussed. I'll do a more in depth post about that tomorrow.

But everything at the new house is NOT perfect or great. The whole inside definitely needs painted. It was recently infested with cockroaches (more on this below). The water lines are busted in many places, with the hot water heater not working currently. Almost every window is in need of some sort of repair, inside or out. The basement and yard is in need of cleaning. The floors bounce terribly just like the house in Iowa Falls. The floor coverings in most rooms need replaced. This is all I have noticed in the 3 days I've been here. I'm sure the list will be longer as time goes on.

The landlord we are renting from is notorious in the area for having rentals that have cockroaches. Although at both houses we have been lucky with the weather killing off most of them, I'm not stupid enough to think they are all gone. This house was heavily infested but also experienced at least a week if not more of temperatures at or below 0F. And even though everything I've read says that at those temperatures they can't live, I'm NOT taking that chance! Plus, we are next door to another rental from the same landlord so there's a good chance that they could walk over to our new house. Orkin will be a constant visitor for the next year, AT LEAST! ~~ I REFUSE to live with ANY bugs! I even throw fits about having piss ants LOL!

I think that this house has LOTS of potential. The landlord has already been asking us if we want to buy it on contract - NO we're not yet even thinking about it! But I do think there is a good potential for us to stay here for the next year and this IS something we are debating.

Other than all that - some of us are sick right now (me, Kaos King, #4) and Darkside has been working. He likes the job, but the inflexibility of days off sucks. He's thinking about looking for a different job, especially since a couple of weeks ago he learned of a possible job opening in a more flexible business. If we ever find any time to do anything like that!

Where's the 'undo' button?

I wish that I could undo my childbirths, especially the girls'. I definitely flaked out during those moments -- it was all the medicine that I had to have because of my high blood pressure, but still!

Hell I fell asleep with #4's head out!! Just gave up in the middle! Thankfully Darkside got me awake and everything ended up ok but jeez!
